6 prohibited7 gated4 conditional

Tobacco, vape, and e-cigarette products

Prohibited
Why

Walmart Marketplace prohibits all tobacco, vape, and nicotine-delivery products outright — no application path. This includes nicotine pouches, vape juice, e-cigarette hardware, and accessories specifically designed for tobacco/vape use.

Where you CAN sell instead

Sell on Amazon's restricted-tobacco program (still gated) or specialty marketplaces. Walmart will not approve these.

Common mistakes
  • Don't try to list a vape device under 'electronics' — Walmart's automated review will flag and remove it
  • Hookah, shisha, and rolling papers are also prohibited even though they don't contain nicotine themselves

Firearms, ammunition, and high-capacity magazines

Prohibited
Why

Federally regulated. Walmart Marketplace does not sell firearms or ammunition through third-party sellers, period.

Where you CAN sell instead

Direct-to-FFL channels (GunBroker, Brownells), or build your own DTC site with FFL-compliant checkout. Not Walmart.

Common mistakes
  • Even firearm parts (slides, frames, lower receivers) are gated/prohibited depending on category
  • Inert/replica firearms (airsoft) have separate rules — see 'Toys: weapons & age-restricted' below

CBD, hemp, cannabis, and cannabinoid products

Prohibited
Why

Walmart Marketplace prohibits all cannabinoid products (including hemp-derived CBD) due to the patchwork of state-level regulation and federal uncertainty. No application path.

Where you CAN sell instead

Direct-to-consumer site, specialty marketplaces (LeafLink for B2B, Weedmaps for retail in legal states), or your own Shopify store with age-verification.

Alcoholic beverages

Prohibited
Why

Walmart sells alcohol via its own first-party retail in some states but does not allow third-party Marketplace sellers to list alcoholic beverages. Federally and state-regulated; the compliance burden is what blocks Marketplace eligibility.

Where you CAN sell instead

Drizly, ReserveBar, Total Wine Marketplace, or your own DTC site with state-by-state shipping compliance.

Prescription drugs and pharmaceuticals

Prohibited
Why

Walmart Pharmacy is a separate first-party operation. Marketplace third-party sellers cannot list any prescription medication, controlled substances, or products requiring a pharmacist.

Where you CAN sell instead

Licensed pharmacy operations only. Walmart's Marketplace is not the right channel.

Common mistakes
  • OTC medications are different — most are allowed but the brand may be gated (see Health & Personal Care below)

Counterfeit, replica, or unauthorized brand items

Prohibited
Why

Walmart's brand-protection enforcement is aggressive. Replica/knockoff items get listings suspended and sellers banned, often without warning.

Where you CAN sell instead

Your own brand. Don't list 'inspired by Louis Vuitton' anything.

Common mistakes
  • Even 'designer dupe' or 'AP-style' watches will get caught by brand-monitoring sweeps
  • Resold authentic brand items can also be flagged if you can't produce supply-chain documentation when challenged

Beauty (cosmetics, fragrance, skincare)

Gated
Why

FDA-regulated. Walmart requires sellers to demonstrate FDA-cosmetic-compliance, brand authorization (for branded items), and authentic-product chain-of-custody documentation.

Path to sell

Apply via Seller Center → Restricted Categories → Beauty. Submit: business license, FDA establishment registration (if you make products), brand authorization letters for any branded SKUs, MSDS for any fragrance products.

Common mistakes
  • Buying retail and reselling = unauthorized reseller — brand-authorization letters required for branded SKUs
  • Bulk/bundled cosmetics often need additional safety documentation

Health & Personal Care (supplements, OTC, devices)

Gated
Why

FDA + FTC regulated. Walmart screens for DSHEA-compliant supplement labeling, FDA-cleared medical devices, and accurate health claims. Mislabeled product = listing pulled + seller penalty.

Path to sell

Apply via Seller Center → Restricted Categories → Health & Personal Care. Submit: business docs, FDA registration (supplements/devices), brand authorization for branded SKUs, ingredient COA for supplements.

Common mistakes
  • Health claims like 'cures', 'treats', 'prevents' are FDA red flags — only supplement-structure-function claims are allowed
  • Medical devices (Class I, II, III) require FDA 510(k) clearance documentation

Grocery, food, and consumables

Gated
Why

FDA Food Safety regulations + Walmart's own consumables-handling standards. Sellers must demonstrate proper food handling, expiration-date management, and (for branded items) authorized-distributor status.

Path to sell

Apply via Seller Center → Restricted Categories → Grocery. Submit: FDA Food Facility Registration, business license, brand authorization for branded SKUs.

Common mistakes
  • Expiration-date violations (selling within 90 days of expiry without disclosure) = automatic delisting
  • Cold-chain items typically require WFS (Walmart Fulfillment Services) — self-fulfillment of cold/frozen is restricted

Baby (formula, food, safety products)

Gated
Why

Children's product safety (CPSIA) compliance + FDA infant-formula regulations. Walmart applies extra scrutiny because of the audience and recall liability.

Path to sell

Apply via Seller Center → Restricted Categories → Baby. Submit: CPSIA Children's Product Certificate (CPC), tracking-label disclosure, lab testing reports for products with size <3.17cm (small parts).

Common mistakes
  • Car seats and strollers need additional FMVSS / ASTM compliance documentation
  • Baby food and formula have cold-chain and lot-tracking requirements similar to grocery

Watches

Gated
Why

High counterfeit volume in this category. Walmart requires brand-authorization letters for any branded watch, and authenticated-supplier documentation for vintage/used.

Path to sell

Apply via Seller Center → Restricted Categories → Watches. Submit: brand authorization letters per brand you intend to sell, authorized-distributor agreements, invoice trail for inventory.

Common mistakes
  • Replica/homage watches will get you banned, not just delisted — Walmart's enforcement is aggressive in this category

Jewelry (fine and fashion)

Gated
Why

FTC Jewelry Guides regulate metal/gem disclosure. Walmart requires sellers to demonstrate accurate metal-purity claims, gem-certification documentation (for diamonds/precious stones), and brand authorization.

Path to sell

Apply via Seller Center → Restricted Categories → Jewelry. Submit: business license, GIA/IGI certification for any diamond ≥0.30ct, brand authorization for branded SKUs, documentation of metal purity (carat/karat).

Common mistakes
  • Calling something 'gold' when it's gold-plated = FTC violation. Use 'gold-plated', 'gold-filled', or specific karat
  • Lab-grown diamonds must be disclosed as such — failing this = delisting + fine risk

Hazardous materials (batteries, aerosols, flammables)

Gated
Why

DOT/IATA shipping regulations. Lithium batteries (especially in devices), aerosols, flammables, and compressed gases need special packaging, labeling, and carrier-approved shipping methods.

Path to sell

Apply via Seller Center → Restricted Categories → Hazmat. Submit: SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for each product, hazmat-trained employee certification (if self-fulfilling), carrier hazmat-shipping account.

Common mistakes
  • Devices with built-in lithium batteries (electronics, power banks) are hazmat — many sellers don't realize this
  • WFS (Walmart Fulfillment Services) handles most hazmat for you if approved — usually easier than self-fulfilling

Heavy or bulky items (>150 lbs or >108 in. longest side)

Conditional
Why

Standard parcel carriers (UPS, FedEx Ground) cap at 150 lbs and 108 inches. Heavier/larger requires LTL freight, which has different shipping cost economics and customer-experience expectations.

Path to sell

List with 'Freight' shipping method enabled. Walmart will route to LTL carriers. You can also use WFS Big & Bulky for heavy items if approved.

Common mistakes
  • Not setting accurate weight + dimensions = customer gets a 'shipping cost not available' error at checkout, lost sale
  • Returns on heavy items are expensive — factor return-shipping cost into your margin or charge restocking fees per Walmart's policy

Toys with safety restrictions (small parts, magnets, projectiles)

Conditional
Why

CPSIA + ASTM F963 toy safety standards. Toys with small parts (≤3.17cm), high-powered magnets (>50 kG²mm² flux index), or projectiles need testing + age-grading + warning labels.

Path to sell

List as a regular toy IF you have CPSC General Certificate of Conformity (GCC) and applicable warning labels. Items with small magnets or projectile components face additional scrutiny.

Common mistakes
  • Small high-powered magnets (Buckyballs-style) are effectively prohibited by CPSC rules even if not explicitly banned by Walmart

Live plants, seeds, and live animals

Conditional
Why

USDA quarantine + state-level invasive-species rules. Some seeds (cannabis-related, invasive species) prohibited; live animals generally prohibited; live plants conditional based on shipping origin/destination.

Path to sell

Live plants: list with proper origin disclosure + certified pest-free documentation. Live animals: prohibited. Seeds: most allowed except cannabis/invasive — disclose state-shipping restrictions.

Auto parts requiring VIN/fitment guarantees

Conditional
Why

Walmart's Parts Finder tool requires sellers to provide accurate Year-Make-Model fitment data. Wrong fitment = high return rate + customer complaints + listing suspension.

Path to sell

Provide complete fitment data via Walmart's Parts Finder feed. Use UPC + universal-fitment matching where possible. Generic 'fits most' claims will get listings buried in search.

FAQ

Walmart restricted categories FAQ

How do I apply to sell in a Walmart restricted category?

Walmart Seller Center → Settings → Categories → Request Approval. You'll submit your business documents, brand authorization letters (if reselling branded items), category-specific compliance docs (FDA registration for supplements, FMVSS for car seats, etc.), and Walmart reviews within 5–15 business days for most categories.

What's the difference between gated, prohibited, and conditional?

Gated = you can sell IF you apply and get approved. Prohibited = you can't sell, period (no application path). Conditional = you can sell IF you meet specific shipping or certification requirements (heavy-bulky needs LTL freight, hazmat needs SDS sheets, etc.).

Can I list a restricted product without applying?

No. Walmart's listing-creation system blocks unapproved sellers from creating items in gated categories. If you somehow get a listing live (e.g. by misclassifying), Walmart's Trust & Safety scans will catch it within hours and remove the listing — repeat violations risk seller-account suspension.

Why are vape and CBD prohibited even though Amazon allows some?

Walmart Marketplace is more conservative than Amazon on regulated-substance categories. There's no application path — these are policy-level prohibitions, not approval-gated. If your business model depends on these, Walmart isn't the right channel.

Is this list current?

Curated as of 2026-05 from Walmart's public seller documentation. Walmart updates the restricted-category list periodically — always cross-check Seller Center → Restricted Categories before submitting an application. We'll refresh this page quarterly.

How long does category approval take?

Most gated categories: 5–15 business days. Health & Personal Care and Baby tend to be slowest (15–30 days) because of the documentation Walmart needs to verify. Beauty and Watches average 7–10 days. Submit complete documentation the first time — incomplete applications get rejected and force a re-submit cycle.
