Walmart Image Rules — White Background, 2000×2000, 4+ Images
Image compliance is the silent killer of Walmart listings. The image-compliance crawler scans every primary image and quietly de-ranks failures — no email warning. This guide covers all enforced rules + how to detect violations.
The hero image rules
Walmart's primary (hero) image is the only image bound by hard rules. The crawler checks: pure white background (RGB 255,255,255), product centered with 15% margin, no text overlays, no watermarks, no lifestyle context, minimum 2000×2000 pixels, JPG or PNG format.
Common failure: using a lifestyle shot as the hero. Walmart accepts lifestyle as image 2 through N but the hero must be the clean product-on-white shot.
Secondary images (2-N)
After the hero, Walmart allows lifestyle, infographic, size-chart, packaging, and 360-degree views. The rules loosen but minimum resolution (2000×2000) still applies. Categories like furniture + apparel reward 7+ images; consumables need only 4-5.
Detecting silent suppression
If your listing dropped from page 1 to page 10 with no listing edits, run the image-compliance check at /tools/walmart-image-compliance. Wrong background tint (off-white instead of pure white) is the #1 silent-suppression cause.
Frequently asked questions
Does the image-rule check happen instantly?
Hero-image rules are enforced within 24h of upload. Secondary-image rules are spot-checked weekly. The crawler is automated — there's no human review.
What counts as 'pure white'?
Strict RGB (255, 255, 255). Off-white at (250, 250, 250) gets flagged. Common cause: studio lighting shifts the background to (252, 250, 248). Run a histogram check before upload.
