Walmart Restricted Categories — Prohibited, Gated, Conditional
Walmart suspended roughly 7% of 3P seller accounts in 2025 for restricted-category violations. Most were sellers who didn't realize their product fell in a restricted category. Knowing the 3 tiers + which categories fall in each is foundational compliance knowledge.
Prohibited (cannot sell)
Walmart will not list these categories under any conditions. Examples: tobacco/vape/e-cigarette, CBD/THC, weapons + ammunition, adult content, controlled substances, stolen goods, counterfeits.
Listing a prohibited category triggers an account-level warning that compounds toward suspension. Three warnings → suspension review.
Gated (requires approval)
These categories CAN be sold but require pre-approval before listing. Examples: dietary supplements (FDA-compliant labeling + manufacturer authorization), OTC medications (NDC number + FDA registration), baby products (CPSIA compliance), Class II medical devices (510(k) clearance), jewelry > $150 (FTC disclosure).
Application turnaround: typically 2-6 weeks. Submit documentation via Seller Center → Restricted Categories → Apply.
Conditional (sellable with rules)
These categories CAN be sold without pre-approval but have specific rules. Examples: hazmat items (DOT classification paperwork before WFS), automotive parts (YMM fitment data required), age-gated products (>18 verification), heavy/bulky items (special shipping).
Conditional rules are enforced at listing time + at fulfillment. Skip the rules → listing buried or removed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if my product is in a restricted category?
Use /tools/walmart-compliance-check to scan your listing draft before publishing. The tool runs the same rules Walmart's listing-validation crawler uses.
What if I list a gated category without applying?
Listing goes live but gets pulled within 90 days when Walmart's compliance crawler detects the missing certification. Account gets a warning. Apply BEFORE listing.
