Walmart barcode lookup FAQ
How does the barcode scan work?
We use your browser's native BarcodeDetector API (Chrome, Edge, Safari 17+) to read the barcode from your phone or laptop camera in real time. No app to install, no upload — the camera stream stays on your device. If your browser doesn't support BarcodeDetector (Firefox), you can paste the digits manually.
Which barcode formats are supported?
UPC-A (12 digits — standard US retail), UPC-E (8 digits — compact), EAN-13 (international), EAN-8 (compact international), GTIN-14 (case/carton barcodes), ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 (books). All are validated with mod-10 check digits before we hit Walmart's search.
Does Walmart always have the matching product?
Walmart's catalog covers most CPG / grocery / electronics / apparel that have UPCs. Products without a Walmart listing (small private-label brands, custom items) won't return matches — you'll see 0 results. Walmart-only items (Great Value, Mainstays, etc.) often have proprietary item IDs rather than UPCs, so scanning a Walmart-private brand may not find itself.
What can I do with the matched listing?
One click runs a free Walmart Listing Audit (40-point check) on the matched product — you see exactly what's holding back its rank. Useful for: checking your own listings against UPCs in your warehouse, scoping out competitor SKUs in retail stores, or evaluating whether to private-label a product you found on a shelf.
Is the camera-scan data sent to your servers?
No. Camera frames are processed entirely in your browser via the BarcodeDetector API. Only the decoded barcode digits (e.g., '012345678905') are sent to ShelfSEO to look up. The video stream never leaves your device.
